The Border Chapel

With the fall of Den Bosch and the Peace of Munster, the Meierij van 's Hertogenbosch became State territory and, as a 'wing region', part of the reformed Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. A consequence of this was that the properties of the parish of St John and the guild of St George were confiscated. This shows that the guild and parish were considered the same institution by the government.

The Catholic people of Goirlen had lost their church. Therefore, the parishioners of St. Jan together with the guild St. Joris moved to Nieuwkerk where professing the Catholic religion was not a problem because the chapel being built was on Spanish territory.
