The Pest cemetery in Alphen

On the Boslust in the outskirts of Alphen, you will find a plague cemetery from the 17th century. In both 1604 and 1625, the contagious bubonic plague prevailed in Alphen. These years took the lives of a quarter of Alphen's population, some 400 plague victims in total, including the two parish priests of the time.

The heikerkhof fell into disrepair over the centuries. Willem Binck was parish priest in Alphen from 1932 to 1963. His hobby was being a folklorist and went in search of the plague cemetery and found it in 1936.

He brought the cemetery back to memory, out of respect for the plague sufferers and their carers of the time. With a small monument and two grave crosses for the two parish priests Adriaensen and Van den Heuvel. In 1987 the cemetery was moved up a little so that it forms an easily accessible resting place for visitors here along the road. Still out of respect for the sufferers and carers of the time
