Church of St Anthony Abbot

Riel had an independent parish church as early as 1519, in the form of a cross chapel in the current churchyard. It was not until 1897 that this church in its current style was built here on Kerkstraat.

The R.K. Church of St Antonius Abbot is a cross church with western entrance tower, built in neo-Gothic style to a design by P.J. van Genk, architect from Leur who designed many churches in the diocese of Breda. In 1932, the church was extended with a side aisle. The interior is richly decorated with neo-Gothic elements (altars, crucifix, stained glass windows and many statues).Yet the overall picture is peaceful. Special attention goes to the baptismal font behind the church from 1519! The oldest bell, cast by Jasper Moer from den Bosch is also from 1519.
