The Lady Chapel at Mill-Hill

During the liberation of Goirle in October 1944, things were tense. In mortal fear, the deeply religious Goirlen people in the air-raid shelter at the Mary's Message church promised that if they survived the war they would build a chapel in honour of Mary. And so it happened. In 1952, the promise was fulfilled! On 6 July 1952, pastor Pessers laid the foundation stone. Jo Bedaux completed the design, and so a substantial chapel was built with a large tower in masonry, and with a beautiful semicircular abscissa. The chapel stood rustically here on the corner of Oude Baan and Venneweg, then still among the swaying corn stalks. The rascals of Goirle couldn't resist and vandalism struck in the 1960s; it cost a few statues. Then the St George's Guild decided to restore and better secure and maintain the chapel. And they still do. Now the Marian chapel here stands a lot safer next to Mill Hill College since 1974.
