We are proud to once again be screening an opera from Amsterdam! And yet another new production: Tosca! The conductor is none other than Lorenzo Viotti with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. And Barry Kosky - as always - provides exceptional direction. Love, lust and political intrigue tumble over each other in the life of the spirited singer Floria Tosca. When her lover is captured by the sadistic police chief Scarpia, Tosca takes fate into her own hands, with a chilling outcome. It is a great pleasure for Australian-German director Barrie Kosky to direct Tosca; it was the first opera he fell head over heels in love with at a young age. In his direction, he gives ample space to the dark side of this opera. So don't expect glamorous Roman churches, rustling velvet or shiny pearl necklaces. Kosky focuses entirely on the fatal psychological drama, with its gory ending. Chief conductor Lorenzo Viotti, who considers himself a servant as well as a champion of Puccini's operas, signs for a musically 'unsweetened' Tosca. He shakes off the performance tradition and goes back to the score with fresh eyes. Viotti musically conducts 'his' Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Opera Chorus and leading soloists.
