Holy Spider is an unconventional thriller based on the true story of Iranian serial killer 'the spider killer'. Award-winning director Ali Abbasi (GRÄNS) convincingly manages to combine a thrilling drama with insight into Iranian society and the position of women. Householder Saeed is on a religious mission. He wants to purge the Iranian city of Mashhad, which is sacred to him, of immoral street prostitutes. After murdering several women, he is deeply affected by the lack of public attention to his mission. Meanwhile, journalist Rahimi bites into the case. "Raw and powerful film by Danish-based Iranian Ali Abbasi (Gräns), in which he returns to 2001, when the Spider Killer murdered 16 women in the holy place Moshhad. The women were all prostitutes and were picked up from the street by the killer and murdered - often in his own home. Abbasi is particularly interested in the aftermath, because when the killer was finally caught, he was a hero in the eyes of many, having cleansed the streets of fornication and impurity."
