TJ Ballantyne runs The Old Oak, the only pub in a former mining town in northern England. The Old Oak is the only place in the now run-down town where residents still get together and meet new people. TJ struggles to keep his pub afloat. While trying to save his pub, tensions rise when Syrian refugees arrive in the village. The unannounced arrival of the Syrian refugees causes a lot of unrest, but for TJ Ballantyne it also presents opportunities, when he gains a connection with one of the refugees, Yara. Among other awards, the film was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival and for a BAFTA, and won several audience awards at film festivals around the world.
