Giuseppe Verdi's first major success! It tells the biblical story of the Jewish exile in Babylon. While working on 'Nabucco', Giuseppe Verdi did not yet know, that in this opera he was creating one of the most famous choral works of all time. In: "Va Pensiero, sull' ali dorate." (Fly, thoughts, on golden wings), the longing for freedom and homeland was expressed so explicitly that this choral work later became the disguised anthem of united Italy. The dramatic power of the choral scenes and the overblown orchestration - unheard of for the time! - heralded a new chapter in operatic history. The opera is still a great success. The perfect example of a tragic opera.
