Thanks to a special collaboration with National Opera & Ballet, this year we are screening a production from our own country: the heartbreaking fairy opera Königskinder! Composer Engelbert Humperdinck is best known for Hänsel und Gretel, his fairytale opera about Hansel and Gretel, which ends with 'happily ever after'. For Königskinder, this is far from true. The goose herder and the king's son realise that what really matters lies within, in the way you treat the world and your fellow man. This makes them the ideal leaders of a village that is in dire need of a ruler. However, the villagers refuse to recognise the young couple as such. Only in death do the two 'royal children' find their kingdom. With this opera, Marc Albrecht, chief conductor of De Nationale Opera and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra from 2011 to 2020 and winner of the Opera Award for 'Best Conductor 2019', returned to Amsterdam. Together, conductor and orchestra achieved great successes with operas by composers such as Wagner, Strauss, Zemlinsky and Schreker. With Königskinder, a richly varied late-romantic work, they build on this.
